Dinner with friends, and a new face--tall, blonde and beautiful, with long golden tresses and a ready laugh. My lesbian side was enthralled. Yet, something was different. What shoulders! Later, outside the restaurant, I found her crying. She had been dumped, her guy leaving in his car with her suitcase. Poor Brogan had no place to stay. I invited her home, and that night I learned part of the truth. She’s in transition. Did I take advantage of a woman in distress? Sorry, I wasn’t raised that way. The next morning, though, was different. Brogan showed me all her secrets.

This is an appropriately titled short story by K. C. Cave. A woman, Natalie, on the prowl at a local restaurant ends up taking home a rather tall and Amazonian woman, Brogan, after she got dumped by the guy she was trying to pick up to get a place to stay.And you can probably figure out the twist just by the title. Turns out Brogan, who lives on the streets and likes guys (she promises), and therefore poses no threat of a girl-girl tryst to Natalie (at least at first), is actually a man. Brogan is “in transition” towards becoming a woman, and has a sob story -- and the equipment -- to satisfy Natalie’s curiosity and horniness.
And that’s where the action comes in. Holy cow, this is a hot gender-bending f**k-story in which they try about every position and role-play trying to make it work between them, to the HEA benefit of both. Brogan, in spite of his/her equipment and ability, comes across as very feminine, a bit at odds with his "I only like boys" position considering how much she's able to meet the challenge.
Brogan finally discovers the joys of making love to a woman (possibly some much needed preliminary research for when he/she completes his journey?), Natalie rides her new cross-gender toy for all her kinky worth, apparently oblivious to the somewhat selfish nature of her appropriation of Brogan’s over-willingness to please.
The story avoids the slightly troubling issue of Brogan’s sexuality and plight being exploited by Natalie. I would have liked to see Brogan have more agency, at least call a couple more of the shots. It’s a happy ending for Natalie (at least, for now) and the writing is great, and hot, and I never got confused by the choreography. :--) Natalie owned Brogan, and Brogan wasn't complaining!
I would have liked to get in Brogan’s head more. I never bought that Brogan had only slept with guys and all this was new -- apparently never having seen a woman naked (yet becoming one?). I couldn’t help wondering if Brogan, whose preferences seem as fluid as her sexuality, might get a taste for the wild side, and become more than Natalie is able to handle as things develop – or transition. Possibly in a sequel?

A strong recommend for trans-gendered romance fans. I like books that push the envelope and go beyond your typical boilerplate billionaire romances. These are different characters, scarred and imperfect, and just seeing them come together was, I admit, a little bit of pulling at my heartstrings. But enjoyably so, and a well told tale. I particularly enjoyed the trans-gendered angle here, and also a lot of the quite powerful statements regarding gender not mattering in love, and the two of them becoming one regardless of differences. Nice work.
